| Joss paper is generally divided into two main types: Yellow Sacrificial Paper and Yuanbao (Ingot) Base Paper. |
| Yellow Sacrificial Paper |
| Traditionally, yellow sacrificial paper is made from plant fibers such as bamboo pulp, straw pulp, or mulberry bark paper. In modern production, it often refers to ordinary base paper (including recycled pulp paper) that has been dyed, embossed, or otherwise processed for ritual use. It is commonly classified into two categories: |
| 1.Plain Yellow Paper: Also known as “fire paper” or “yellow burning paper.” The surface has no printing or embossing. It is the most basic form of “loose change” spirit money. |
| 2.Printed / Processed Yellow Paper: Based on plain yellow paper, it is printed with coin patterns, rebirth mantras, Jade Emperor money motifs, or perforated for specific uses. |
| Yuanbao (Ingot) Base Paper |
| Yuanbao base paper can be regarded as a semi-finished product or blank stock. In the factory, it is usually supplied in large rolls. Common colors are cream, white, or grey. |
| 1.Cream-colored base paper: Typically made from imported wood pulp, offering better quality. |
| 2.White / Grey base paper: Mostly produced from domestic recycled pulp, with relatively lower cost. |
| Processing Flow: From Base Paper to Finished Product |
| Yuanbao base paper must go through a complete automated production line before it becomes usable reel paper for folding machines. The main steps are: |
| 1.Lamination: The base paper is bonded with a layer of metallized (aluminum-coated) film using a water-based adhesive. This is the key step that gives the paper its metallic luster. |
| 2.Dyeing: The laminated paper is fed into a dyeing bath and colored gold, silver, red, blue, green, or other required shades according to demand. |
| 3.Drying: The paper passes through a high-temperature drying oven to fully cure the adhesive and dye, preventing color fading and sticking. |
| 4.Slitting: The dried jumbo rolls are slit into reels of different widths to meet the requirements of downstream Yuanbao folding machines. |
